Linda Kean currently serves as the Director of the School of Communication at East Carolina University. She is beginning her sixth year in this role. Linda moved here in 1998 after receiving her master’s degree and Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Linda’s area of focus in her teaching and research is health communication, specifically media and health. She is interested in health-related subject matter in entertainment, advertising and editorial media content, and its potential impact on viewers/readers. She is also interested in designing and evaluating media campaigns that promote the adoption of positive health behaviors. Although now in an administrative role, Linda taught for almost 10 years in the School of Communication. Courses she enjoys teaching include Media Effects, Media and Health, Small Group Communication and Public Relations Strategies. She continues to guest lecture on campus and in the community on topics in her area of expertise.
The School of Communication at ECU has almost 1,000 undergraduate majors with concentrations in journalism, public relations, interpersonal/organizational communication, and media studies. Linda has two children, Benjamin, 9, and Makayla, 6, who attend Greenville Montessori School. She is married to Martin Kean, Vice President of Carolina Technical Plastics in New Bern, N.C. The family lives in Winterville.
